Strengthening HIV Case Finding: HSCL ACE 3 Conducts ICT and Genealogy Training in Kebbi State
From April 28 to May 2, 2025, Health Systems Consult Limited (HSCL) ACE 3 hosted a five-day intensive training on HIV Index Case Testing (ICT) and Genealogy in Birnin Kebbi. Supported by SACA, National Clinical Mentors, and other key stakeholders, the training brought together 25 healthcare workers from 11 LGAs to enhance targeted HIV testing for the biological and sexual contacts of people living with HIV (PLHIV).
Participants deepened their understanding of Family Index Testing by identifying and reaching partners and children of PLHIV, and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Screening through ensuring safety before and during partner notification. They also learnt motivational interviewing skills by improving client engagement and disclosure.
The sessions emphasized client safety, confidentiality, and effective communication, while addressing persistent barriers such as stigma, fear, and logistical challenges to testing and linkage to care.
Additional case-finding approaches, including Social Network Testing (SNT) and Provider-Initiated Testing and Counselling (PITC), were introduced to broaden outreach. Practical role-plays and real-life case studies allowed participants to apply new skills in realistic scenarios.
Post-training assessments showed marked improvement in participants’ knowledge and practical skills. With a renewed commitment to ethical, client-centred HIV testing, trainees are now better equipped to integrate these practices across supported sites, bringing Kebbi State closer to HIV epidemic control.
