"I joined HSCL as a fresh graduate with just one clear dream: to come to Abuja, work in a science-related field, and be happy. I got all that, and so much more."

How It All Began

When I first arrived in Abuja as a corps member, I was open to whatever opportunities came my way. Then HSCL came my way. I didn't know what to expect. On my very first day, I was given my first task, and while it challenged me, it showed me how efficient and fast-paced the HSCL environment is. I quickly realized this was a different kind of environment.

But I wasn't afraid, because I noticed something special. The team understood that learning takes time. No one expected me to know everything, because the culture here embraces learning at every level. This made me less fearful of the work and more open to learning.

Learning from Experts

My internship gave me access to some of the most skilled professionals in public health and development. I got to sit in on meetings, hear their thoughts on complex issues, and watch how they approached problem-solving. Knowledge-sharing is deeply embedded in HSCL's culture, and it was one of the most valuable parts of my experience.

The organization also makes sure your growth is intentional. Your work is noticed, tracked, and rewarded. Team leads consistently acknowledge effort, even on tasks that may seem small now but were significant milestones at the time.

My First "Big Girl Task"

A turning point came when I was sent, alone, to Sokoto State to supervise primary data collection for a gender analysis project. You can check out more on the gender analysis project here.

That trip changed my perspective. Speaking to marginalized women and hearing how deeply sociocultural norms affected their rights and livelihoods was eye-opening. It shifted my view from seeing our work as just desk assignments to realizing the very real, human impact of what we do.

The Birth of Passion

That Sokoto experience lit a fire in me. It gave meaning to the work and made me want to give my best every time. I became committed not just to completing tasks, but to understanding the "why" behind them, and contributing meaningfully to solving real-world problems.

The Skills I've Built Along the Way

When I think about my growth at HSCL, I see more than just experiences, I see skills that have transformed the way I think, work, and contribute.

I came in with only basic academic knowledge, but here, theory quickly met practice. My data analysis skills grew from simple spreadsheet work to confidently using STATA for advanced statistical analysis and Power BI for creating interactive dashboards that turn raw data into actionable insights.

In research and writing, I learned to transform field findings into technical publications and donor reports and storytelling using graphic design. I learned the balance between technical precision and clear communication, using graphics, and how to make data understandable without losing its depth.

Through Gender inclusion training, I gained the skills to integrate gender considerations and perspectives into project design and evaluation. This wasn't just theory, I applied it by designing gender-sensitive tools and interpreting data to highlight inequities and recommend solutions.

My role in proposal writing and business development sharpened my ability to craft competitive bids that merge technical expertise with strategic storytelling. I learned how to align a project idea with a donor's priorities while showcasing the unique strengths of our team.

Finally, I developed skills in financial modelling, using quantitative analysis to support program planning and illustrate the cost implications of various design options, a skill that bridges technical analysis with real-world decision-making.

These represent more than résumé highlights; they reflect my transformation into a more confident, capable, and purpose-driven professional.

Wrapping Up

Looking back, I see how far I've come, from a corps member searching for a PPA (after navigating a few initial setbacks in my search for a placement) to becoming part of a work family that believes in my potential and challenges me to grow. HSCL has not just been a workplace; it has been a fertile ground for my professional and personal transformation.

Building Careers, Transforming Lives
