In its effort to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in Northwest Nigeria, the HSCL ACE3 project recently conducted a sensitization and testing event in Kebbi State. The event which was held at the NASFAT mosque in Birnin Kebbi on September 29 was aimed at addressing the stigma surrounding HIV, while also promoting awareness and testing in the communities. Over 50 community members actively participated, supported by the Imam and health workers, who created a welcoming and safe environment for open discussions which focused on the importance of HIV testing, prevention methods, and debunking common myths.
Special emphasis was given to the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), underscoring how HIV-positive pregnant women can prevent transmitting the virus to their babies during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
Participants were offered free and confidential HIV testing, which many appreciated due to the private and supportive environment created by trained counsellors. About 50 individuals took advantage of the testing services.
This event marked a significant step in HSCL ACE3’s efforts to combat HIV stigma and empower individuals to take control of their health. By encouraging open dialogue and awareness, the program is creating a more informed and supportive community in Kebbi. This kind of initiative sets a strong foundation for sustained HIV education, testing, and prevention efforts across the region.
